This assignment requires you to complete the first 2 modules of this subject, including watching Cassie’s story (Dyan Ngal), and critically reflect on your learning through the lens of social, cultural, ethical and/or nursing issues that have been covered thus far in this subject.
You are required to write a reflective piece of 800 words, drawing on your reflections throughout the course, and using the ‘The 4Rs Model of Reflective Thinking’:
Reporting: What are the historical legislation, policies, and practice that have worked together to impact on Indigenous Australian identity, culture and health? What are some of the modern implications of this, as shown in Cassie’s stor
Relating: Make connections between these factors, the lived experience in Cassie’s story, and your professional and personal experiences, identifying issues that relate to the experience of Indigenous people and those who provide healthcare.
Reasoning: Explain the role of and importance of developing Indigenous Cultural Competency for healthcare.
Reconstructing: What does all this mean for your future practice? What practices might you adopt or change? What is the theory that supports that?
Writing guidelines
• Since this assessment requires self-reflection, writing in first person is acceptable.
• Response to questions must be in narrative form, not dot points.
• Use formal English language, avoiding jargon or colloquial language.
• Integrate supportive literature into the discussion to demonstrate critical reflection. A minimum of four references is required.
• Students are expected to use correct terminology as outlined in the NSW Health Communicating Positively guide which is located in the resources folder on the Interact2 site.

Rationale
In this subject you are required to produce reflective writing in order to learn from educational experiences, and to develop the habit of critical reflection as a future health professional.
Our nursing practices are underpinned by beliefs and values that are often unexamined and may not reflect good practice or the needs of Indigenous Australian peoples. Self-reflection can help to eliminate bias in nurses, which is key to reducing health disparities for Indigenous Australians. For this reason the process of reflection is a key step in the cultural competency journey. This assessment task will assist students to:
• Identify and examine underlying beliefs and values
• Better understand their strengths and weaknesses
• Acknowledge and challenge possible assumptions on which ideas, feelings and actions are based
• Recognise areas of potential bias or discrimination and
• Identify possible areas for improvement
This assessment item relates to the following learning outcomes:
• Discuss Indigenous Australian’s cultures and historical backgrounds and examine legislation, policies and practices that have impacted on Indigenous Australian identity, cultures and health (NMBA 1.3, 1.4, 6.5)
• Articulate the relationship between historical, cultural, legislative, policy and practice factors that affect the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians and their implications for nursing, health care provision and health system responsiveness (NMBA 1.3, 1.4, 6.5)
• Reflect on and evaluate personal values and beliefs through of their own culture and Indigenous Australian cultures (NMBA 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 2.3, 2.7)
