Use of Persuasion by Medical Professionals

In the Seminar, you will discuss the use of persuasion by medical professionals in the public health field. This is problematic in a number of ways described in your readings. Prior to the Seminar, give some thought to the use of persuasion by human service professionals and the impact this can have on a client and the helping relationship. It may be helpful to conduct additional research on this issue as well.

Please come to Seminar prepared to discuss the following:

• What information did you learn from your own research about the use of persuasion with clients?
• Do you think this practice is harmful to the helping relationship? If so, how? Is it unethical? If so, why?
• How do you think this behavior impacts the following parties: The client? The helping relationship? The human service professional? Society as a whole?
