Social Media and Adolescent Identity
For most, social media is a valuable and fun tool to communicate with friends and family and stay up-to-date on global interests. However, social media can also play a negative role in adolescent development, particularly identity. Rather than rely on their self-perception and self-confidence, or even the opinions of their parents and close friends, teens are seeking out approval from strangers on social media. It is not uncommon for a teenager to take more value from a stranger calling them “ugly” or “hot” on Instagram or Snapchat than their parents complimenting their talents and abilities.
So what does this mean for the teenagers who are attempting to navigate the uncertainty of who they are? I’d like you to read the following article by Barth (2015) who discusses the impact of social media on development, looking at both the good and the bad.
For this discussion, your initial post will reflect the following questions:
– How can social media impact psychosocial development in adolescents (good and bad)?
– Utilizing Erikson’s psychosocial stage of development identity vs. role confusion, how does social media contribute to the crisis and the resolution of this stage?
– What are some actions caregivers and other adults do to intervene?
Be sure to utilize APA in-text citations when supporting your ideas. Your initial post must be at least 250 words. Please respond to at least one (1) peer and offer substantial feedback, evaluating their ideas and supportive resources, and more than just “Good job.”
