Journal Article Critique Format

The following is an outline of the critique for journal articles. The format is as follows: THE ARTICLE MUST BE an experimental RESEARCH STUDY! The critique must be written in the third person and must be paraphrased.

Using the format for a reference citation – give the name of the article and authors.

Use the following Headings:

Purpose: State clearly (paraphrase) the authors/researcher’s purpose or objective(s) of the article or research; what he/she is attempting to accomplish; and what the specific question(s) or problem that is being addressed is.

Method: State clearly the methodological procedures used by the researcher(s) to collect data indicating participants, i.e., the sex, age, and number of persons studied, procedure and instruments employed to gather and analyze information.

Findings/Results: Succinctly state what the researcher(s) discovered, revealed, uncovered or found as a result of their investigation. This information is usually found under the article’s subheading of findings or results.

Discussion: Review the investigator’s intent/purpose of the study and provide an overview of how the central or major elements, variables or hypotheses were researched or handled. Address the “so what” of the findings/results.

Implications for Multi-cultural Counseling: Your implications should address how the results/findings of the study impacts on the role of counselors or other helping professionals, the counseling relationship and/or counseling approaches.

Recommendations: The recommendations simply state what is being suggested for further or future study as a result of the study’s limitations, focus, research variables, limitations understudied and the like to enhance or provide additional knowledge and insight. The emphasis in this section should explain how the research could be improved.
