Observational Study of Parent-Child Interactions

Unit 3 Project: Observational Study of Parent-Child Interactions

This third unit offers one assessment – a ‘Project’, which is to be submitted by the end of the unit. This is worth 20% of the overall module grade. You may remember that there were three main parenting styles as defined by Baumrind (1971, 1991). These are: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive, with the permissive style further classified into warm/indulgent and neglecting/rejecting variants. For this assignment, you will locate and rate video clips of parents and children, then compare your ratings to those of your family and friends. Rating video clips in terms of the parenting style displayed represents fairly high-level judgements. Since you need to be clear about which behaviours and actions are representative of which parenting style before you make your observations, please review resources in Unit 2, including Steinberg et al. (2006).
