We are studying Cognitive Behavioral therapy this semester. You are not training to be a therapist, per se, but many of you will find yourself doing therapy for part or all of sessions that you have with patients. You will therefore be expected to have 7 45 minute sessions with a patient, someone not known to you and hopefully found at your clinical site. ( make up a patient). You are to use the techniques from CBT along with some other techniques that you find in your texts or in your readings and provide a professional write up of what you have done in the sessions and how the patient has progressed. There is an example of the CBT write up in the Beck book Cognitive Behavior Therapy p. 361). You will elaborate on this in addition to using that format. This paper will be expected to be at least 9 pages in length and should describe the patient in a bit more detail than Beck does, the techniques used and the progress made. An identification of what techniques work best and provide you with more data from closed questions of from open questions. Important aspects to be covered include forms you have used, patient responses, behavioral assignments or homeworks, non-verbal aspects of sessions, transference and counter-transferences noted and what you learned from the assignment. You are reading Yalom’s The Gift of Therapy and the Beck text and it is assumed that you will take insights from those sources as well.
