final assignment will build on the mid-term assignment and enable you to do
more detailed research and analysis on your chosen non-profit organization.

• You prepare a set of questions that you will use in an interview to be conducted
later in the course. The results of that interview will be key to your final
assignments. Your draft questions will be included as an appendix to the midterm
assignment.
• For the mid-term assignment/research paper, you will create an overview of the
organization you selected and prepare a preliminary assessment of the strategic
issues it faces.
Content of the Mid-Term Assignment:
• Your paper should include the following components:
– Why you chose this organization (introduction)
– What you have learned so far about its history, origins, current mission and
impact
– The type of non-profit organization it is and its governance structure (if the
governance structure information is accessible at this stage)
– How this organization compares to other organizations in its sector
– External environmental scan of trends that may affect the organization’s
future: global/national, community, sector and/or competitive trends (Political,
Economic, Social, Technology, Legal, Environmental trends)
– Preliminary assessment of the key strategic issues you believe the leaders of
this organization should be addressing (based on the external environmental
scan)
– A conclusion

Selecting Your Non-Profit Organization
• Select a non-profit organization that you’re interested in researching throughout
the course.
• The organization should be incorporated as a non-profit in Ontario, Canada or
internationally. We will be asking each student to confirm their selected
organization during the second week of class, and to post their choice on the
class Discussion Board, to ensure selections fit the criteria for the course.
• Please ensure that you will be able to access information about your chosen
organization and that you will be able to interview at least one senior leader
within the organization later in the course (late October – early November)
Research Paper: Guidelines:
• Your research paper should be a maximum of 1,500 words (plus attachments).
Being selective in the information you include is an important skill. If you have
questions or concerns, please speak with one of your instructors.
• Recommended Format:
– Cover
– Double spaced page
– 11 or 12 point Times New Roman or Arial font
– 1 inch margins (e.g. Default settings in MS Word)
– 1,500 words will result in a 5-7 page paper using these formatting guidelines.
• Please reference the sources of information included in your paper. We
encourage you to do your own scan of the external environment as opposed to
using information prepared by your selected organization.
• Attachments:
– Your research paper should include an additional page (or equivalent space
throughout the paper) for one or more charts, tables, graphics or other visual
presentation of selected information to support and enhance the written
component of your paper.
– Interview question appendix: Your research paper should also include a final
page with a list of questions you propose to ask when you interview someone
in your chosen organization.

Mid-Term and Final assignments – How do They Connect?
• Your mid-term paper will provide a descriptive overview of the organization you
have selected to research.
• Your final assignment will be more prescriptive, with recommendations based on
the strategic issues and change drivers you will have summarized in your midterm
assignment.
• In the final assignment, you will include an actual change leadership plan that will
demonstrate how the organization might successfully implement the strategy to
effect the desired change.
