The day my grandfather died was actually the saddest day of my entire life. This is because as a young child, I lived with my grandfather. Each time thoughts of my grandfather crossed my mind, I got a warm feeling in my heart, but all that changed the minute I received the saddest news that completely confused me the news of my grandfather’s departure. To make things worse, I didn’t even know my grandfather was seriously sick because my mom and cousins had chosen to not tell me. I had been sitting for my end-of-semester exams around precisely the same time that he became sick.
I can still recall that fateful Thursday morning when my cousin came at the school’s residential hall at which I had been staying. He did not really tell me what was occurring, but out of his hesitant voice, I could tell that something was horribly wrong. About an hour later, my mother also came, and it was she who clearly explained that my grandfather had actually passed away. Even though my mother told me the sad news using a soothing tone, I still did not believe her. The one hour journey to my grandfather’s house felt like an eternity. I kept wishing my mother would push faster and faster towards my grandfather’s home. As we headed towards his house, memories of the many joyful moments we spent together kept crossing my mind and as the ideas kept coming, I could not help but to feel some extreme sadness as tears freely rolled down my cheeks. It is just when I got to my grandfather’s house and realized he was to welcome us nor was he anywhere in the house that it truly hit me that my grandfather was really dead. Passing had robbed me of a genuine friend.
A couple of days after, the opportunity to hold a mass in honor of my departed grandfather came. My family, neighbors, and family friends met in the church where several speakers gave emotional speeches of what they can remember about my buddy and best friend. Once the mass was finished, we headed to the cemetery and discovered that some men had made all of the preparations for my grandfather’s burial. The pole bearers enabled us to have a final look at my grandfather so we could say our last goodbye before burial.
