Map Assignment (15%)
Instructions:
Time and space are equally important for understanding historical processes. Create one map (with a 2-page paper and a bibliography) to discuss the spread and development of Buddhism OR Confucianism in at least two of the three East Asian countries in pre-1800 periods. The map and the paper should have a thesis/main argument; it is the same as an analysis of your topic. You must draw on the textbook and other course material as sources of information. Please do not use external material in your analysis.
Requirements:
- Please identify at least 4 places on this map (from at least two of the three countries). You can choose which countries you want to include in this exercise and the number of specific places from each country. The places can be cities, provinces, bays and islands, mountains, and so on. But they cannot be too broad.
- In terms of the form of the map, you can borrow a map from the textbook or from a website and rework it (as long as you acknowledge the source of your base map). It could even be your own drawing. You are encouraged to explore digital map-making tools and add visual elements. Be creative and you could earn some extra credit.
- In addition to presenting these places on a map, this exercise asks you to write a 2-page paper (double-spaced) to discuss the historical process you are describing and analyzing with the map.
Grading rubric (total points: 15 & up to 1.0 extra point):
- What is the main historical observation/argument you are trying to convey through this map and the short paper? Make sure in the introduction of the paper, you make this clear. (2.5 points)
- Have you identified enough number of places on the map? Have you covered at least two of the three East Asian countries we explore in this class? (3 points)
- Does the short paper correspond to the map? Does it show a good understanding of the course material and the topic? (6 points)
- Is the paper coherently written and reasonably organized? (1.5 point)
- At the end of the paper, please provide a bibliography listing the course material (lectures and readings) that you draw on. (1 points)
- Spelling and grammar (1 point)
- Extra credit will be given if a map includes some visual (0.5) or interactive features (1.0). Extra credit is meant to encourage creative efforts. But it is completely fine if you present a conventional map with place names only.
