After going over the figure in the textbook, I am not surprised that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States today. Look at the way we live and eat. Fast food is everywhere and practically a staple in today’s society and not everyone makes the time to properly exercise. I think it was interesting that back in 1900, the leading causes of death were things that couldn’t be prevented at the time. Now, heart disease can be prevented. Sometimes, it is a natural thing but I believe that heart disease is more of something we bring upon ourselves with our lifestyles.
Yes, I would completely agree that mental health issues are more prevalent in lower class environments. From my personal experience, stress causes depression, and things like money issues, health issues, etc cause stress. These things are more common in lower class environments. Another issue we see more often is violence and crime in lower class areas. These things can also cause depression.
I think as human service professionals, we can try our best to help those in need of mental health care receive it, regardless of social class. If they can’t afford it or don’t have health insurance, help them sign up for medicaid or find a counselor that would be willing to donate time. (I know that if I was a counselor, I would be willing to donate time on specific days or hours for those who truly could not afford it!) Anyone who needs mental health care should be able to get the help they need.
