The City of Mandurah is a popular retirement destination for many West Australians, favoured for its coastal lifestyle it has seen the population double in the past 15years.  The surge in population has put great strain on the current City of Mandurah Council services and infrastructure.  The CEO of the City of Mandurah Council has requested your consultancy service to address IT issues, capacity planning and network issues.

The City of Mandurah has many services geographically dispersed across the region that includes suburbs such as Madora Bay, Silver Sands, San Remo, Dawesville, Bouvard and Falcon.  As a result, the following buildings and services are dispersed throughout the city: Mandurah Head Office, Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, Mandurah Library, Falcon Library, Mandurah Museum, Mandurah Seniors and Community Centre, and Mandurah Waste Management Centre.

Current IT Infrastructure

Currently the head office is the only location with any IT infrastructure in place.  The head office has

40 desktop computers, 1 multifunctional printer, 1 Domain Controller, 1 File Server and 1 Print Server.   In addition, the head office also has 48 Cat5 Communication Ports, 1 Cisco 48 port switch, 1 Cisco router and 1 ADLS2 Internet Connection.

All other offices and building do not have any IT infrastructure in place.

You are expected to design a IT network infrastructure that addresses the following criteria.

  • The City of Mandurah intends to connect all of the existing external offices (both libraries, aquatic and recreation centre, museum, seniors and community centre, and waste management centre) to the head office via a fast internet connection, to allow data sharing, and access to council IT applications.
  • All external offices are expected to have at least 5 networked computers and printing services.
  • All external offices will allow staff to login to the head office remotely.
  • The Council expects to introduce IP Phone facilities to all offices by 2020.
  • All IT services and infrastructure will be centralised at the head office.
  • Mandurah is a popular destination and it is expected that the population will double again over the next ten years, and as a result the infrastructure should include allowances for expansion.

You are to propose a detailed high-level network solution that addresses the Criteria of the City of Mandurah and the report should cover the following:

1.A set of detailed network diagrams that shows the proposed network infrastructure.    (ULO 3)

2.An analysis, recommendation and justification of Local Area Network Technology and Infrastructure required. (ULO 2)

3.An analysis, recommendation and justification of Wide Area Network Technology and Infrastructure. (ULO 2)

  1. A list of hardware and software specifications for all Servers, Workstations, Printers, Tablets and Networking Devices (including NOS and application software). (ULO 2)
  1. A plan of how you would address any Security concerns in relation to the operating systems and network. (ULO 1)

You should ensure that all components in the proposed infrastructure would work together effectively.

  • Any assumptions you make should be documented.
  • Green IT technologies should be considered in your design.
  • Explanatory notes should be provided detailing why specific technology choices have been made.
  • As a consultant you should draw on your expertise to advise the Council when necessary. If, in your professional opinion, there are requirements which have not been specified but you feel should be included, you should include them in your recommendations.  (ULO 1)
  • Information transmitted between the external offices could be sensitive, and therefore you should address any potential security concerns.
