After you have read both chapters, please watch the film, Frozen River. It is just about two hours long.  Then proceed to the ASSIGNMENT – FROZEN RIVER QUESTIONS.

After reading Chapters 8 and 11 in your text, please watch the film Frozen River.  As I announced in the syllabus and again last week, the film is available on some online subscription services as well as at libraries and through online orders.  It is about two hours long.
Once you have read and watched, please complete the following assignment, and submit it to me In addition to the examples and discussion you draw from the film, in your short essays I’ll be looking for supporting evidence and reference from what you have learned in Chapters 8 and 11.
Questions for Frozen River
Please think about these questions in relation to the film as you watch it, then answer these questions in short essays of 150-200 words each. Please support ALL your responses with concepts and/or references to the readings in Chapters 8 and 11 of your text.

1.  Consider the concepts of income, wealth, education, occupation, and status.  Describe how these concepts can be applied to Ray.  To Lila.  Give at least one example of each.
2.  What issues of stratification, class and inequality do you see in the portrayal of Ray’s life? In Lila’s life?  Give one example/illustration of at least one of each concept.
3.  On page 202-203 of your text there are brief summaries of stratification according to Marx and Weber.  Illustrate each using one example from the film.

4. Describe the hierarchy of race in the community(ies) of Ray and Lila.  Do they belong to one community or more?  Defend your response with concepts from the text.
5.  Why do you think an entire chapter on Ethnicity and Race has only 3 very brief references to Native Americans?  Remember to base your answer in sociological terms, not your opinion alone.
