Fatigue Presentation (Health & Occupational Health & Safety)
Final Assignment
In most Canadian organizations, one of the most critical steps for improving fatigue management is to create an awareness of how fatigue affects health and safety and how this impacts the company. Your final assignment is to enhance fatigue awareness among your organization’s senior management team and then to use that awareness to demonstrate the need for a fatigue management strategy. You will design an executive presentation to share your knowledge about fatigue and to demonstrate the need for fatigue management within your company. As you design your presentation, think about the needs of your audience and be sure to tailor the information accordingly. Remember, senior leadership typically wants specific information that relates to organizational needs and goals. If you are not currently employed by a company, feel free to choose any other organization or industry to focus on for the purpose of this assignment.
Use your best judgment to determine the needs of both the organization and the senior management team and then present them with the reasons as to why implementing a Fatigue Risk Management Strategy (FRMS) would be of strategic benefit. Specifically, within the presentation you should include: • A brief overview of your company (For example, “Here at ABC we pride ourselves on our ability to provide the best oil service work in the province.”) • An explanation of how fatigue is a health and safety risk within your organization and your industry. • A list of specific safety hazards that exist within your organization (for example, things that might be detailed in a Fatigue Hazard Assessment (FHA), such as long working hours, high risk work, high demand projects or travel.) • A business case to justify implementing a Fatigue Risk Management Plan (FRMP) (how this makes sense in terms of business values, such as improved productivity, reduced overtime, reduced incidents). • An explanation of how a FRMS might improve the issues you identified. • An explanation of how a FRMS would align with existing safety management systems and human resource management systems. • A basic (brief) overview of what a fatigue strategy for your company might involve. • Suggested timelines for implementing a fatigue strategy within your company.
Format: Your presentation should be in the form of PowerPoint slides with the text of the accompanying presentation dialogue placed in the Notes pane of each slide. Each slide should have a few short points clearly presented on it, and an accompanying visual, if possible. In the Notes pane, the dialogue portion of the assignment should reflect what you would actually say during a live presentation and should be written in full sentences. Quantity: The presentation should be between 10 to 20 slides and be approximately 20 to 30 minutes in length. Time Frame: It’s expected that the research, planning, development, and refinement of work for this assignment will take you approximately eight hours to complete. Criteria: Your assignment will be judged based on the following criteria: • How well it addresses the specific requirements listed above • How effectively it presents the information (that is, uses visuals, does not have too much text on each slide, avoids “death by PPT”, is professional, etc.) • How well you demonstrate an understanding of fatigue and fatigue management concepts • How well you target a senior leadership audience • Overall impression of the presentation For a full understanding of marking criteria, please review the rubic. Acceptable Assignment Formats PPT: As described above, the most common format used by students to submit this presentation assignment is to create a PowerPoint document with the relevant talking points embedded in the Notes pane of each slide. Audio: If you wish, you may also submit your
PowerPoint slides with recorded audio narration; this is only acceptable if the presentation is provided as a self-running (automatic) slideshow. This option is only recommended if you are already familiar with this process or you have strong technical support to assist you in the creation of this kind of presentation. Video: You may also choose to submit your PPT slides with a video of you presenting the content. The video must be uploaded to YouTube, but you can make it an “Unlisted” video if you don’t want it to be available to the public or discoverable by search. You may (or may not) choose to have an actual audience present in the video. If you submit a video, you will need to submit a copy of your PPT slides and the YouTube link to the finished video. If you choose to do a video, you do not need to write out your talking points in the Notes pane.
