CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
Part A: Perturbing thoughts (8 marks total)
Cinderella had a fairy godmother who turned (a magical transformation) mice into horses and pumpkins into
carriages so that Cinderella could be taken to the ball https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cindere|la (1950 film)#P|ot
Task 1:
Step 1: Take the last 2 numbers in your student number. If they are the not the same number then go to Step 2.
If they are the same number add 1 to the last number (e.g. ’77’ 9 ’78’). In the case of ’99’ it will go to’90’.
e.g. 54465227 9 2 and 7
54465233 9 3 and 4
54465299 9 9 and 0
54465200 9 0 and 1
Step 2: Select the two words from the following list which correspond to your two numbers from step 1.
Number Word
spoon
banana
key
toothbrush
fork
pen
teacup
frog
KOOONmU‘l-bUJNI—‘O
For example, if your student number is 20150537. The two numbers would be ‘3’ and ‘7’ and the two words that
you should use are ‘key’ and ‘pen’.
Step 3: Describe the two additional (untold i.e. you are making it up) magical transformations that the fairy
godmother made with the two objects corresponding to your two words. These transformations were also
needed for Cinderella to attend the ball. It is important that your transformation resembles or is in some way
connected to the original object (this resemblance may need to be explained in your report). (2 marks each = 4
marks total)
Task 2: In less than 15 words write a (fake) news story headline involving the reversion of one your objects from
Step 1 back to its original form on the way to, at, or on the way home from the ball. (2 marks)
Task 3: The fairy godmother has a ‘normal’ job (when she is not being a fairy godmother). What is it and
describe a typical day? No more than 40 words. (2 marks).
Hint: Your first idea is rarely your best. Try many options and choose your best. Think about it from now until
April. The more outlandish or funny the better, in my View.
Marking guide:
For each 2 marks: 0 if did not complete, 0.5 if poor, 1 if idea just OK, 1.5 mark if idea good, 2 marks if was really
interesting/surprising/original.
Part B: Innovation all around us (11 marks)
The human body has changed with time. It has changed with evolution (e.g. bigger brains, shape of pelvis). It
has changed with nutrition (taller, fatter, longer-lived). It has changed with fashion (e.g. tattoos, make-up, 6
packs versus beer guts). It has changed by travel (e.g. mixing backgrounds). It has changed with medical science
(e.g. longevity, bionic implants, tissue engineering) and technology. We have even expanded our memory and
communications through wireless devices like phones.
1. Choose one aspect (e.g. you might choose obesity, telecommunications, shoes size, and so on) and
discuss the 3-4 key innovations that occurred for us (our human form) to get to this present state.
Justify why you believe these are the key innovations. (5 marks)
2. Predict changes to the human body in terms of this aspect (that you chose above) that are likely to
occur over the next 10 years? Why do you think so? (3 marks if the ideas are feasible)
3. In the distant future, e.g. 50 to 100 years, what will this aspect then be like? What crazy futuristic
features could it have? (3 marks for great futuristic ideas, not necessarily feasible)
Total word limit for Part B: 800 words.
Part C: Creativity and Innovation around us (6 marks)
Wicked problems are problems that are complex, hard to define, generally do not have an easy solution, have
lots of vested interests and perhaps all options for solutions are in some way bad or a poor compromise (see
https://www.wickedproblems.com). Examples are (but not limited to) climate change, gun control, sugar over-
consumption, water scarcity, political conflict, aging or growing population.
Choose an organisation (e.g. private, government, non-profit) that you believe are trying to make a difference to
a wicked problem (e.g. one discussed in your workshop) through creative and innovative methods.
1. What activities of the company do you consider to be creative and innovative, that is, why did you
choose it? (3 marks)
2. Briefly, what is it about the organisation’s structure (e.g. size, age, market segment, beginnings (history)
contributes to its creativity? Again justify why you think so. (3 marks)
Total word limit for Part C: 500 words. Marks awarded based on thoughtful or well-reasoned arguments.
In Parts B and C it is important to develop an argument to support your views.
Referencing: should I or shouldn’t I?
Referencing serves two purposes:
1. Attributing the ideas with integrity. Use referencing to be transparent about what are your
ideas/opinions and what belong to others and upon whom you are relying.
2. Provide a path for others to retrace your steps. If someone wants to read what you have read, back to
the primary source, referencing enables this to happen.
On the question of style, (Harvard etc) I don’t particularly care, just as long as it is consistent and satisfies the
needs of purpose number 2 above. That is, give enough information to the best of your ability so that someone
else can find the exact same source.
The question of referencing in the assignment then is determined by your need to satisfy purposes 1 and 2?
That will vary between each of you.
Referencing is not included in the word count.
