English: Genre Comparison

I want to use the popular article and Scholarly article, also the format should be in APA styles.

Topic  In your first essay, you’ll compare two articles on the same topic, one from a scholarly journal article and one from a popular source.  Make sure your scholarly journal article comes from ProQuest Research Library, JSTOR, or Science Direct (because I want you to demonstrate the ability to use the databases available at Durham Tech).  As for how you complete the assignment, you have two options.  The first option is for you to pick out both of your articles.  This means that you find a popular article on the internet and a scholarly article in the databases to use.  The articles need to be on the same topic for you to be able to compare them.  The second option is to use one of the popular articles in the back of your TS/IS book.  If you use this option, choose an article from the back of TS/IS that most closely lines up with your academic and career field of interest.  You can choose between one of the following three articles: Gerald Graff’s “Hidden Intellectualism,” Michael Littman’s “’Rise of the Machines’ Is Not a Likely Future,” or Michelle Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.”  Graff focuses on education; Littman on the technology and AI; and Alexander on the race and incarceration rates from a social sciences perspective.  If you use the second option, your scholarly article would need to be on the same subject as your popular article to allow for clear comparison.  Regardless of which option you choose, your task is the same.  You should look at the two articles and address the similarities and differences in the following areas:

  • What are the claims of each article?
  • Who is the audience and what is the purpose of each article?
  • How do the articles use Rhetorical Appeals (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos)?
  • How do the articles use sources?

Purpose  The purpose of this assignment is to strengthen students’ understandings of genre conventions.  Strengthen skills in critical reading and analysis, strengthen writing skills, essay organization, process approach.

Format  Your comparison will take the form of an academic essay of 4 – 6 pages.  You will need to cite both sources at least three times, and document your use of your sources using APA Style.
