– How does this media impact your personal space? Be specific.
– Based on what we have covered in class, describe the uses and functions of media in your life. For instance, which apps do you like to use? Why?

– If you were to avoid these media, would you suffer any consequences or benefits from avoiding media?
– What did you learn about your media consumption from this exercise? Are there any changes you would make to these habits?

“The top five media that reflect my media usage is phone, computer, music, movies, and books. All of this media impacts my personal space. My phone is almost always within arm’s reach, and if it’s not, there’s a good reason. My computer is less important than my phone but still much more important than a lot of my other belongings. For the most part, I always know where my computer is. Music, movies, and books impact my personal space much less than my phone and computer. If I had to choose one, I’d say music impacts my personal space third most. I wouldn’t be listening to music without my phone or computer, but it still remains a very important part of my day. Unless I’m watching a movie or reading a book, I’m playing music.

In an ideal world, media would be extremely useful for news. This is what it used to be exclusively used for. However, media is more of a source of entertainment nowadays than a tool for information. Don’t get me wrong, I love it. But I spend the majority of my time on Instagram and Depop, I can’t say those apps are necessarily furthering my knowledge.

If I were to avoid these media, I would experience many more benefits than consequences. For one thing, I would sleep better. According to the National Sleep Foundation, your phone scree emits a blue light that can interfere with your body’s production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep (Lanquist). Other benefits would include greater involvement in real life interactions and relationships, lower levels of anxiety, higher quality of life, and lower levels of depression.

While I’m fully aware that I am an avid user of media, I am nearly certain that I balance it well. That’s not to say I’m never on my phone when I’m not supposed to be, but that is to say that I’ve seen much worse. In 2017, the average American spent more than 12 hours a day with various media, from TV to smartphones to laptops to newspapers (Donovan). I don’t put THAT much time into my media. Besides, experiencing things with your own eyes is much more fun anyways.
