Cause and Effect
ESSAY 2: THE CAUSE AND EFFECT ESSAY(EGL 1010) PROF. WRIGHT
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE ESSAY: The Cause and Effect Essay can either examine the cause, the effect, or both the cause and effect of an event. We will examine both the cause and the effect in this essay. Learn more about this writing approach in Successful College Writing, p. 473 – 500. See p. 486 as an organizational guide.
PROMPT (THE ASSIGNMENT):
In society, events happen that impact other aspects of an individual’s life. Reflect upon a problematic causal relationship, such as a government shutdown, an electrical fire, a car crash, a home invasion, a sprained ankle, etc.
In an extended essay, examine the cause (or the issue), the resulting effect(s), and preventions. Choose from the options above in yellow or select another problematic event as the focus for your essay. Use two or more secondary resources to support your claims about the effects of the problematic event and to research ways to take precautions to avoid such a problem (or to endure the effects).
Tips: If your topic is a power outage, consider the effects of a power outage. Research either online or at a local library to find two or more reliable resources on the effects of a power outage that would support your claims about the effects and ways to prevent them or survive them.
FORMATTING:
• You will have three body paragraphs for this essay. Body paragraph 1 will focus on discussing the cause or the problematic event/issue. Body paragraph 2 will focus on the effects or the outcomes. Body paragraph 3 will present safeguards or preventative steps that can be taken to try to prevent the event from happening again. Note: If there are no preventions or the event is uncontrollable, then body paragraph 3 will focus on ways to live with the resulting condition. Be sure to use evidence in body paragraph 2 and 3 only.
