Writing Assignment for Contending Perspectives in Economics
The tone of this short essay is that of an opinion editorial, it should target the average newspaper
reader- an educated individual who is not an expert in economics. You are to present an argument to back up an opinion you have using insights from two schools of thought studied this
semester. You should fully explain the key economic ideas included in your essay.
Your final essay is due by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 30th via the submission folder on
TCU Online.
No alternative submissions will be accepted. Technological problems are not a valid excuse for
lateness. Plan in advance, save your drafts in multiple places, double-check to see if your paper
actually uploads to the folder. Email it to me before the deadline if you are having difficulties.
Length: 4-6 pages
Format: 12-point font. Double-spaced. 1” margins on all sides. MLA formatting for in-text
citations and the works cited page.
Your essay should be structured as follows:
Lede: This is the introduction section of your op-ed; it is intended to entice the reader into
reading the full story. This section is normally the first one or two paragraphs, each paragraph 3
– 6 sentences in length. It tells the reader the “who, what, when, where” of your topic.
Brief Summary of Conclusion: This is the “why” or “why care” part of your op-ed. Yes, the
conclusion may seem out of place based on writing approaches you have used for other
assignments, but you do need to bring the conclusion more to the front for op-eds. It is normally
1 – 2 paragraphs, each paragraph 2 – 5 sentences in length. In many cases, authors will use a
one-sentence paragraph to emphasize a particular aspect of the conclusion to ensure that the
reader gives the idea more attention.
Evidence/Analysis: This section is should be 5– 8 paragraphs in length. The paragraphs, while
still short compared to more standard writing styles, are often a bit longer than those from the
Lede and Summary of the Conclusion. This is because you are discussing examples and
presenting expert statements that support your Conclusion. Each paragraph should be 4-8
sentences in length.
Concentrate on economic theories and potential policy solutions rather than people. There will be
some educational aspect to your presentation where some explanation of economic concepts may
be necessary; however, be sure to live by the “show, don’t tell” mantra. Also, translate statistics
into grounded numbers that can be easily digested by your reader.
Avoid using jargon, but if you must use jargon, pause to quickly define—in two short sentences
or less—the term and get back to your argument. Be sure to thoroughly explain any economic
concepts you include. Remember your audience is a well-educated average person, but one who
has not studied economics. I might understand what something means without much explanation,
but I need you to demonstrate to me that you understand what a certain theory or concept means
and how that connects to your topic.

Writing Assignment for Contending Perspectives in Economics
You should use actual academic research found in scholarly journal articles to support your
arguments.
Conclusion: This is where you are to summarize the similarities between the two competing
perspectives you use to analyze your topic and explain how to go forward. All op-eds should be
forward-looking. That is, do not just explain that there is some problem to which we should find
a solution. Offer a possible solution. This section is normally 1 – 3 paragraphs, 3 – 6 sentences in
length.
You are strongly encouraged to read examples of op-eds in news outlets such as: The Economist,
The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Financial Times,
Business Week, Forbes, and other widely respected national (or international) news outlets.
You are welcome to submit your op-ed to me for comments about how to revise prior to the
deadline. In order to receive comments from me, I must receive your draft one week prior to the
deadline. No exceptions.

The proposal must include a 1-2 paragraph summary of the topic you are interested in discussing

In addition, you should include 3-4 paragraphs discussing why the schools of thought you have
chosen are useful to analyze your topic. These summaries should reference scholarly economic
research found in academic journals and reputable national and international news sources.
