Building an AP Essay – THE OAK WAY

Planning:
1. Carefully read the prompt (and passage when applicable).
2. Circle words that give specific, direct, important instructions/topics to address.
3. Take 10-12 minutes (tops) to write a purpose statement and map out your essay.
4. Begin Writing, keeping an eye on the clock.
The Essay:
I. Introduction (All Commentary)
A. Use a hook (a thoughtful aphorism, pertinent quote, or perhaps unconventional statement).
B. Build a bridge (one or two sentences seamlessly connecting the hook to the thesis).
C. Thesis Statement which addresses the prompt

Topic Sentence (TS)- supports a point from your thesis

Concrete Detail (CD)- an example which supports the topic sentence
Commentary (CM)- explanatory support/opinion on the example
Commentary (CM)- further extension/development on the example
Chunk 2
Concrete Detail (CD)- a second example which supports the topic sentence Commentary (CM)- explanatory support/opinion on the example
Commentary (CM)- further extension/development on the example
Optional chunk 3 (CD, CM, CM)
Concluding Sentence- the point of this sentence is to go back and wrap up the central point of this paragraph, but it IS NOT a simple restating of the topic sentence; it’s a reiteration of the point at hand, a final commentary so to speak.
III. KOHS Body Paragraph #2
