1. As business managers, you are required to do many things. It is a challenging career that requires countless hours of hard work. In trying to better prepare yourself as a manager, it is important that you truly understand what is expected. While there are a variety of terms used to describe the job of manager, the duties are usually outlined in these tasks called functions. Please discuss and explain the basic functions of management. Please describe some common mistakes that managers make in their careers.
2. Organizational culture is often described as the company’s personality. A strong culture should be the driving force in most organizations. Discuss organizational culture and how it is developed in the work place.

You’re about ready to sign a big new client to a contract worth over $50,000. Your boss is under a lot of pressure to increase sales. He calls you into his office and tells you his job is on the line, and he asks you to include the revenue for your contract in the sales figures for the quarter that ends tomorrow. You know the contract is a sure thing but the client is out of town and cannot possibly sign by tomorrow.
Please discuss: What is the ethical dilemma? What are the consequences for the various stakeholders? What do you do?
4. Business must stay ‘in tune’ with their surroundings. They do not (nor can they) make decisions in a vacuum. Please describe what is meant by environmental analysis. Please provide examples that will help support your discussion of the different environments.
5. Planning, planning and more planning is the key to being successful. While we all know that we need to plan more, we sometimes do not plan. In some cases, we do not fully understand the planning process, levels of planning and types of planning. Please consider the difference between tactical, operational and strategic planning and at what level of the organization is responsible for each? How do we become better planners?
6. The business community has changed over the last century. Discuss the societal trends that have influenced managers over the last century. Based on your findings what are your predictions for the next 10 years?
7. In light of the fact that managers have so many electronic tools and software programs at their fingertips, are managers better today to sustain a competitive advantage and manage effectively?
8. In your own words, describe the steps involved in the strategy-making process. What company in the market today successfully takes on each step. Apply the process to the company to show how it works and successfully functions.
