Statistical Methods for Research High-Performance MSc 2017-
The file “assignment_data.csv” provides data on 100 athletes that did an exercise throwing a heavy object. They repeated the exercise before and after a training session and the distances achieved are recorded in the variables “dist0” and “dist1” respectively. The data base also contains the sex and weight of the participants
Write a short report of NO MORE than TWO PAGES to answer the questions below. You can use any statistical package or a calculator. JAMOVI and JASP should do the job.
Questions
- Give appropriate numerical summaries of the variables sex, weight and distances achieved before and after the training.
- What is the difference of average weight between men and women in the sample? What is a reasonable interval for this difference in the population? (hint: use Student’s t-test)
- What are the expected errors of our sample means for both distances? Therefore, what would be reasonable intervals to estimate the average distances before and after the training in the population?
- Is it reasonable to think that the population could achieve an average distance of 20.5 BEFORE the training? And 21? Why? And is reasonable to think that the population can achieve an average distance be 21 AFTER the training? Is this enough evidence that the training changes the average distance achieved by the athletes? (reason your answer)
- What is the average gain or loss of distance in the sample after doing the training? What would be a reasonable interval for the average gain or loss in the population?
- Based on your analysis. Do you think there is enough evidence that the training changes the average distance achieved by the athletes?
