TOPICS THAT YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHOOSE:

*      ABORTION

*      CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

*      EUTHANASIA

*      ANIMAL TESTING

*      GLOBAL WARMING

*      LEGALIZATION OF ANY KIND

*      SEX EDUCATION

TOPICS YOU CAN CHOOSE: As you formulate your argument, provide actual examples, based on your research, to support your position. Be sure to acknowledge and logically dismantle opposing points of view along the way.

Ø  To what extent does television contribute to the dehumanization of minorities?

Ø  Write an essay analyzing a Web site of a group of people brought together by a common heritage or common interests. Discuss how the association and its Web site create a sense of identity among its members and promote an image of its members to outsiders.

Ø  Research arguments about laws or college policies regarding the disabled, for example, about making buildings accessible to the handicapped or giving the disabled equal access to education and jobs. Select one of these issues and write a research paper that argues your position on that issue.

Ø  Argue whether or not teachers should discuss and disclose their moral beliefs and positions to their students.

Ø  Write a research paper about one or more of the ways that cultures deal with death and remember the dead, analyzing what these ceremonies and memorials suggest about the culture’s attitudes toward and beliefs about death and an afterlife.

Ø  Research and analyze the functions of various technologies and modern media for churches and other religious or spiritual movements and organizations.

Ø  Explain the meaning of a certain eponym, such as Orwellian, Kafkaesque, Homeric, or Darwinian. You should find examples of sentences that include the eponym of your choice and anyalyze what the eponym means in those sentences as well as conduct research about the life and work of the person named by the eponym. Your essay should decide whether the meaning of the eponym oversimplifies or distorts people’s image of the person.

Ø  Research and discuss the issues of making English the official language of the U.S. Should immigrant children learn English? Research bilingual ballots and how they frequently cause Americans to engage in emotional, divisive debates. Why do many Americans feel so strongly about this issue?

Ø  Some people are trying to redefine insulting epithets “from terms of abuse to terms of affection” so that the words lose their power to demean and hurt people. Write a research paper about the attempts to redefine a racial, sexual orientation, ethnic, or sexist epithet, including the arguments of people who oppose these attempts.

Ø  Write a research paper about how colleges and universities sell higher education.

Topics Based on NPR’s “Is Believing In God Evolutionarily Advantageous?”

Ø  Consider how religion is portrayed in the NPR audio article. Are these accurate depictions of the influence of religion? Why or why not? Are there other instances that you can find through research that would either support or reject your argument? Use the NPR audio article as support for your argument.

Ø  Using the NPR audio article as support for your argument, what is wrong with cheaters and liars? According to Bering, “a belief in God serves a very important purpose: Religious beliefs set us on the path to modern life by stopping cheaters and promoting the social good.” According to Johnson, “Even a few cheats undermine cooperation.” What do they mean? Using research to support your stance, provide an argument on this issue.

Topic Based on Spike Jonze’s film Her

Ø  Her explores the boundary between the virtual and the real. Jonze’s film doesn’t make technology the focus. Rather, he’s interested in alienation, and the role that technology plays in reconstructing love, desire and identity. Conduct research on this and present a case as to how technology affects, and will continue to affect, the social constructs of love, desire and one’s identity.
