In this essay, you are given the task of describing a scandal in detail. In this extended description, you need to demonstrate a solid understanding of how a scandal is defined and what its constitutive elements are, based on John Thompson (1997). Clearly state what transgression is involved (including whether there are any secondary transgressions revealed in later stages), what evidence there is of the transgression becoming public knowledge, what “opprobrious discourse” it incites, and what reputational damage the perpetrator risks. To write this essay, you need to be very familiar with Thompson’s writing and to know how to elaborate on the concept of scandal using a real life example of your own choosing. When choosing a scandal, ask yourself the following questions: (1) How well does this scandal conform to Thompson’s definition? (2) Has this scandal generated enough news coverage for me to investigate? (3) Is this scandal part of a long chain of events? If yes, how should I delimit the boundary to make it manageable?
At least five different, credible sources are required. They must be properly cited using APA style. No academic references are needed.
