As a basic guideline, the first two-thirds of your review should summarize the author’s main ideas and the final third should evaluate the book. The written review that you hand in should include the following:

-heading that gives all the relevant bibliographic information about the book, i.e., title, author, publisher, et cetera
-introduction that provides a very brief overview of the book’s contents, the book’s (author’s) purpose, and your overall reaction and evaluation
-background information that places the book and author in context
-overview of the book, including the thesis and a summary of the main points illustrated by quotations from the book
-your evaluation of the book, including how well it has achieved its purpose, what the book contributes to discussion of the topic, what the book omits, what specific points are not convincing, and what your personal experience is in relation to the topic
conclusion that ties together your review and provides a concise summary comment on the book
