Good practice in academic writing

 Writing style

  • You must write in the 3rd
  • Please do not use “I”, the “author”, or “practitioner”. For example instead of writing “I carried out a holistic patient assessment” you could write “an holistic patient assessment was conducted” Instead of “the author felt this to be inappropriate practice” you could write “this not best practice because” etc..

Developing an argument

  • Remember to use “what, why and who said so” as a basic writing guide.
  • “What” refers to explaining the situation.
  • “Why” is explaining why the situation is important or needs to be discussed.
  • “Who said so” is who would support what you are saying i.e. the supporting theory, policy or referential material.

Structuring your work

  • You need a logical structure to your work, e.g. follow the assignment guide.
  • You also need to consider a logical structure to paragraphs; include all relevant material to the topic within each paragraph rather than having to return to the topic in later sections.

Planning your work

Before you start writing it is useful to make a detailed essay plan that identifies sections of the essay and the key content for each section. Having an essay plan helps you to fully cover each content area before moving on to the next.

Presentation of your work

  • Front page, main work, references, appendices (if any).
  • Include the module title, code, student number and total wordage on the front page.
  • Double space your work.
  • Arial or Verdana font, size 12 and justified.
  • Number your pages.

Appendices

  • Appendices are rarely needed; appendices should be relevant and specifically referred to in the assignment text.
  • Wordage in the appendices is not counted and not marked.
