Final Exam Essay Philosophy 110
Summer Session II, 2018 Write a 4-6 page essay that describes and explains either Zack’s or Appiah’s book, as well as how it applies, presupposes, or otherwise uses or parallels ideas from one or more of the moral theories we have read earlier in the course. Pick either Zack’s or Appiah’s book and describe and explain (i.e., summarize) what you take to be its most salient ideas. Then explore how it utilizes, presumes, or parallels ideas we have encountered in Aristotle, Kant, and/or Tiberius, specifically and/or generally, as well as how effective you believe those appropriations or parallels have been. This assignment requires you to show your competence in understanding at least two works we have studied in the course, one of which must be one of the last two works we have read. You will need to describe and explain the work’s theory in some detail, as well as describe and explain how ideas from that work derives from or parallels other work(s) we have read earlier. You are free to use the Powerpoint lecture slides and other course materials, but note that I will require you to make at least three specific references (i.e., quotes and/or close paraphrases) to either Zack’s or Appiah’s work, as well as at least three such references to other work(s) we have read. This assignment requires you to show that you can summarize and critically discuss work we have read in the course. You may address specific ways in which one work draws from or parallels another; or you may address how that work draws on or parallels other philosophical work we have read in a more global fashion. Remember to argue for your claims in the sense we have discussed throughout the course. You may also add your own commentary, illustrations, criticisms regarding how the theory operates or draws on the other material. All other things being equal, this sort of originality is usually characteristic of the best essays. While preparing to write your essay and in writing the essay itself, you may find Warburton, Philosophy: the Essential Study Guide, pp. 49-79 helpful. (Note that pp. 50-51 in particular addresses summary plus critical discussion question prompts like this one.) Essay requirements:
• 4-6 pages, double-spaced, word-processed, and in a clearly readable font • description, explanation, and analysis of either Zack’s or Appiah’s works, and its use of
ideas in Aristotle, Kant, and/or Tiberius • specific references (i.e., quotes and paraphrases) to at least two books we have read in the course [Note: you are required to have at least three specific references from either Zack’s or Appiah’s works, as well as at least three references from one or more other works we have read for the course] • proofread (for spelling, grammar, punctuation, missing words, etc.) • titled, with your name, course, and section number in an upper corner of the first page • approximately one-half to one-inch margins • pages numbered • quotations and paraphrases cited according to a recognized citation format (for example, in
MLA style by author and page, with a “Works Cited” section at the end of the essay) (see also the style guides posted for this course on Brightspace by D2L)
