Use information from this lesson to complete the following writing assignment:

All societies have rules and regulations in place to maintain control and order over their population. Violations of those rules and regulations result in the application of sanctions. As we saw in the readings and the video, sanctions can be formal or informal, and negative or positive.

For this assignment, think of a recent time when you used informal negative sanctions. This is an example of a time when you thought someone was being deviant or behaving inappropriately, and you did something in response in the form of an informal negative sanction.

• What act were you responding to and how did you respond (your informal negative sanction)?
• How did your informal negative sanction affect the deviant person or people?
• How did your reaction help maintain social control in this situation?
