An essay is a piece of writing on a topic. It is different from a report in the light of the fact that essays can be subjective and defined by the kind of topic that has been selected for the same. For example, a reflective essay would ideally have less number of references than one that is argumentative. This is because, in case of more references, there would be less scope of personal analysis which might accrue negative remarks.
