Career Objectives Report
This assessment is worth 10% of your final mark and is due Week 5.
Goal
A job campaign consists of many tasks: writing a resume, finding potential employers, reviewing job openings, interviewing, receiving rejections, negotiating job offers, and making many decisions. The best place to start is with a goal or a career objective. It may be helpful to ask, “What do I want to do?” and “Where do I want to be?” Hence, the goal of this assessment is to identify and craft your career objectives.
Requirements
- Research about and create two career objectives, one long-term and one short-term (you decide what constitutes long and short for you), that are:
- Personal (i.e., they match your strengths and personal goals).
Identify who you are and what you want to be in a professional context. - Focus on your future career aspirations.
- Indicate the skills you would require.

For these objectives, remember that they are best written as action statements and not full sentences with lots of description. The key is to get at the heart of what you want to accomplish.
- Write up a report (not an essay) that includes:
- An introduction that explains the career field of your interest and the possible position title you are seeking (e.g., accountant), plus the report objective statement.
- A discussion section that includes:
- your two career objectives (one long-term and one short-term)
- a brief but specific plan of how you will achieve these objectives
- the timeline required
- Report style language focused on the facts you are presenting.
- Headings to separate report sections.
- Your name and course information at the top of the first page.
Notes: one of the biggest differences between an essay and a report is the use of headings. Reports are best presented in sections that relate to what your audience is expecting (or your instructions indicate), so be straightforward about your objective and your section headings. Report style language is fact-based and straight to the point unless the information is unwanted or unexpected – not the case in this situation.
