Friendship is a phrase we are familiar with, and most of us assume we’ve got friends. But do we? To most people friendship assumes certain rights and rights. For me, a friend isn’t only a person that has rights in my life. Friends are people who take seriously the duties, obligations, and responsibilities of friendship.
Everybody knows that when you are friends with somebody they assume certain rights and rights. They can open my fridge and create a snack and offer me a cup of java in my kitchen. When they are sad or guilty and share their secrets with me. To the degree, I allow this so I’m considered a good friend.
However, these privileges carry with them mutual obligations. You, as my friend, should return the favors. While I arrive with my kids you need to welcome them and me, not hide under the bed or even a flood of excuses. You are obliged to give me a lift to fetch my vehicle, fill up my empty pocket, and drink coffee that I make you into your own kitchen. And do not hide your leftovers once I rummage in your kitchen to get a bite.
Then we must look at the two words which make up the word friendship. It’s been said that it is two men in one boat. Now that is where obligation comes in. Two guys in a ship don’t imply one pops the boat, while another lies in the sun tanning and sipping Coke, Pepsi or even Buds. They both have to row the ship. This means they have an equal responsibility to make time in busy schedules to get together. If the one is repeating again his wife left him and took his dog for the hundredth time you have to demonstrate sympathy, even if you’re happy that the dog no more visits and chews your new couch. It’s a responsibility that undergirds the rights and privileges.
Friendship comes with responsibilities also. When he is pouring his heart out for you then you must listen. You’re responsible to give him advice rebuke and correction. And above all, when he does not heed it and falls, you have the responsibility to stand with him, in his failure, disgrace, and shame. To identify with him, comfort and encourage him and help him get up. And at the limit to just forgive and love him.
I have a friendly feeling and attitude towards my dog, but we aren’t friends. Likewise, I’ve exactly the identical friendly feeling to the waitress at the local restaurant, but I don’t even know her surname. I know I have nine friends and think about myself wealthy because of them. Each is a rare treasure.
