JOURNAL

Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote “The Yellow Wall-paper” during a time when women were thought to be delicate and in need of being taken care of in many ways. If a female showed any sort of emotion or independence, she was usually given the “rest” cure.

The narrator, who identifies herself in the third person as Jane, by the end of the story, has been given the bed rest cure.  What exactly is wrong with Jane?  I would like you to consider the time period, the role of women, and avoid the word “crazy.” This answer really requires some close reading and interpretation of many symbols in the story.  Please support your answer with direct quotations from the text and use proper MLA format when citing.

This should be a one-page response, and since it is informal, you may use the first person if it helps you get your ideas out on paper. Feel free to write more, if you’d like.
