Sustainable Development:

As outlined in the Brundtland Report, sustainable development is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED 1987:6). Since Brundtland, sustainability has been an attractive idea in discourse because it represents a ‘common language’ through which environmentalists and economic developers frame environmentalist issues (Macnaghten & Urry 1998).

Sustainable Tourism:

“Sustainable tourism development requires theinformed participation of all relevant stakeholders, as well as strong political leadership to ensure wide participation and consensus building. Achieving sustainable tourism is a continuous process and it requires constant monitoring of impacts, introducing the necessary preventive and/or corrective measures whenever necessary.

Sustainable tourism should also maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience to the tourists, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them. ” World Tourism Organization, 2004

–Using the above statements as a prompt for analysis please write a paper which critiques the concept of sustainable tourism within parks and protected areas. Critique the strengths and weakness of sustainable tourism as a concept and how (or if) it is difficult to implement in a real-world protected area context. If you want you can select a case study for your paper. You can use this case study to analyze the concept of sustainable tourism and how it plays out within your particular case study selection. For example you can focus on topics which are not limited to:

Ecotourism
Human-wildlife conflicts
Recreation conflicts in protected areas
Wildlife tourism
Indigenous peoples and protected areas
Climate change and protected areas
Overdevelopment of tourism sites
UNESCO World Heritage sites
Marine protected area conflicts

–Just remember your paper should do the following: (1) Introduce the concept of sustainable development (2) Introduce the concept of sustainable tourism (3) Critique the concept of sustainable tourism (what are its strengths, weaknesses etc.) (4) You can choose a specific case study or conflict(s). You can also use specific national or international case studies. It is up to you how to structure your paper and your argument.

Standard essay format (including intro/thesis, body and conclusion).

A minimum total of 10 academic sources. Academic sources include books from the library or journal articles which can be found on the library website or via Google scholar. Office reports from agencies such as the UN or UNESCO etc., also count as academic sources. Newspaper articles and media reporting can be used but they DO NOT COUNT as your sources. For instance if you use 10 google scholar PDF’s this counts as 10 academic sources.

Sources such as Wikipedia cannot be used. You will loose points

You must cite your references both within the text and at the end in the bibliography. You cannot hand up a paper with 10 sources listed in the end of the paper without citing these sources within the main body.

You must include a “works cited” page (i.e. references/bibliography)

Essays must be properly structured, ideas expressed clearly, subtitles and sub-sections may be used to organize your arguments/ enhance clarity
