Purpose: Students are expected to write a major assignment which demonstrates in depth critical thinking about working with a special needs population/offender group involved in the criminal justice system.
This paper starts with a critical reflection identifying and discussing the complexities of this special needs group and then looks at best practices and services for this group including a specific Ontario based program. The paper will conclude with students putting together specific steps to work with this client group.
Marking Criteria
Ensure that you use subheadings in your paper as clearly outlined below
Part A: Introduction – 1 mark
Clearly state the focus of your paper and what you will be covering and addressing in this assignment. Make it focused.
Part B: Critical Reflection – 4 marks
Identify and describe the diversity and complexity of the specific offender/special needs group that you have chosen and identify issues and challenges specific to this group. Demonstrate understanding of the psychopathology and how these factors may affect this client groups functioning within the community and within correctional facilities. Discuss what you think would make this special needs group challenging to work with. Make sure to demonstrate reflection, research and critical thinking.

Part C: Research – 5 marks
Discuss the best practices for working with this group in the justice system. Ensure that this is based on Canadian information. Define what best practice means. Be very clear what the research shows in regards to working with this group and discuss harm reduction. Be very specific with the research and data as to which methods have the best outcomes and why. If a lack of research exists make sure to discuss that as well.

Part D: Community Program – 4 marks
Analyze at least one specific Ontario based program that works with this special needs offender group and discuss their ability to accommodate offender needs and foster harm reduction. Based on best practices, does it work effectively with this group? In this section, demonstrate an understanding of community resources available for managing this specific special need group and critically reflect on the programs ability or inability to meet the needs of that group.
Note: do not just use an agencies website as your source of information as this will not give you enough detail.
Part E: Putting it together – 3 marks
Based on the research that you have done and best practices for this client group. How would you practice community inclusivity with this client group? What steps would YOU have to take to ensure that you could work with this client group. Discuss training, techniques and skills that you would personally help bring this offender group into a future state of inclusivity. This is not a general section but one that is very specific.
