1. You are a systems analyst and you are tasked to build a new website system for a publishing company. You have a solid experience is with traditional data and process modeling techniques. Recently, you learned an object-oriented approach and you decide to try it by mixing it with the traditional structured analysis approach. Therefore, the question is, “Can structured techniques and object-oriented techniques be mixed? How should we start? How can they be mixed? How are the tasks in this mixed approach different from traditional structured analysis?
2. Wonderful Chicken Wings restaurant wants to automate its system to order chicken wings for delivery through a phone. When customers call Wonderful Chicken Wings on the phone, they are asked their phone number. When the number is typed into a computer and if this is a regular customer then the name, address, and last order date is automatically brought up on the screen. However, if this is a new customer then they will be asked for their name and address and then a new customer record is created. The order will then be taken and the total plus tax is calculated.
The order will be given to the restaurant chef for cooking and a receipt will be printed. A delivery person picks up and give customers their order and a copy of the receipt. The system also reports weekly totals to the company management for comparison with last year’s performance.
a. Draw a context-level data flow diagram for the “Wonderful Chicken Wings Order” system.
b. Explode the above context-level diagram by drawing the logical data flow diagram level 0 showing all the major processes.
3. Your manager recently mentioned to you that “since data flow diagrams and systems flowcharts provide redundant pictures of an information system so we don’t need both. As a result, we can eliminate one of them to save time and deliver our system ahead of timer.” Do you agree with your manager? Please respond to your manager with your comment as a systems analyst.
