“The New Jim Crow”
Here is the prompt from the English professor. We have been reading “They Say I Say” and “Understanding Rhetoric”.
In this response, you will practice identifying the major claims made by Michelle Alexander in “The New Jim Crow” and the supporting evidence for those claims while also analyzing how her use of rhetorical strategies helps her to formulate a rhetorical appeal. In short, your aim is to identify two claims that the author made, and for those two claims, show how each one is supported by 2-3 pieces of evidence. You also want to identify at least three rhetorical strategies the author incorporates into the text and examine how she uses them to build a rhetorical appeal (ethos, pathos, or logos). Make sure to also identify how the rhetorical appeal affects the audience.
In terms of structure, ideally you will have a short introductory paragraph where you introduce the author and the text in addition to providing a short context of the text/subject (“they say”) to orient your audience to what you will be exploring in your response. Generally the best pattern for body paragraphs is explore one main idea. You may choose to first explicate the claims and their supporting pieces of evidence and then move into showing how specific rhetorical strategies function within the text to form a rhetorical appeal.
While your first read through the text should involve you reading mainly for comprehension, future passes need to be done in active reading mode where you are critically engaging with the details of the text. Question every choice the author made (because those choices were intentional) and flesh out the larger implications or significance’s at work.
Do not simply summarize the text. Assume that your reader has already read the text and knows what’s going on. You want to interpret the textual details, not summarize them. Additionally, there is no need to incorporate other sources into your response. Practice analyzing one text and thinking critically about the details at hand.
Technical requirements:
Times New Roman 12 point font
1 inch margins
Double spaced (3-4 pages minimum)
MLA header and formatting
