Bible & Western Culture Exam Paper
In answering the first exam question, I am requiring you to watch and use one video on the Exodus by the Egyptologist James Hoffmeier.
You may find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBWWO8dCeY0.
This scholar provides a somewhat different perspective from your textbooks and his presentation gives more in-depth analysis than your textbooks are able to provide. Please make sure you craft an answer to question 1 that incorporates both your reading of the Book of Exodus, your reading of John Collins, Introduction to the Hebrew Bible, and the video presentation of Hoffmeier. As you may have guessed by now, I don’t think that the historicity of the Exodus is a simple issue, so make sure you nuance this question carefully with the evidence you find in these resources.
3) I provide estimates of how long I think your answers should be for each question in parentheses after the question. This is just an estimate. The main thing is the quality of content of your answer.
4) Question 6 is extra credit. You don’t have to answer it, but if you do (and you do a good job answering it), then I’ll boost your overall grade for the exam a bit.
5) Please answer all questions in complete sentences, with proper grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
6) Answering the questions on this exam is not meant to be a reflection of your personal faith position. You may not agree with the presentation of the evidence put forth by your textbooks or the videos, and that’s fine. (I find myself at odds with your textbooks on numerous points!) Just do a good job of interacting critically with the material and explaining the authors’ viewpoints clearly and as fully as space allows.
