1.
This discussion is for you to present your thoughts on the 18 June 2017 Jabiru J430 accident (Australian aviation investigation number: AO2017-063) and possible causal factors associated with the engine failure in flight (Jabiru 3300A engine). This accident occurred in Australia, and some of the aircraft maintenance rules are slightly different, but for this accident investigation you will apply the FAA rules and regulations to the accident during your analysis. The discussion forum is designed to facilitate an understanding and application of reciprocating engine system component relationships and engine performance calculations. As with many investigations, not all the information will be available to the investigator. Therefore, an investigator must apply his/her knowledge and consider other potential contributing factors, which is sometimes called taking a 360-degree view of the accident factors.
You will learn much more from participating in the investigation without any previous knowledge of the events or circumstances. But if you are familiar with the accident, or have done a little research and discovered the causes of the accident, please allow your classmates the opportunity to perform their own assessment.

- Explain the engine take-off performance parameters/limits, when the engine has no failure (based on sea-level).
- What were the likely contributing factors to the engine failure? Explain why you believe these factors contributed or did not contribute.
- In your own words, what engine parameters were visually available to the pilot and how were these indications important to the pilot making a decision?
- What possible factors contributed to the engine failure? Example: processes, procedures, maintenance, environmental, operational, etc.
- What, if anything, would you do differently in the investigation?

1. Give some critical thought to what you found especially important or new in what you studied in this module.
2. Summarize, in your own words, the reading assignment and learning objectives for the module, considering:
a. What is significant to an investigator? Why?
b. What information is useful? Why?
c. What level of detail is effective? Why?
3. Provide sources of any information not originated by you.
4. Follow the APA Formatting Requirements in the Course Specific Information course area.

- Explain the engine take-off performance parameters/limits, when the engine has no failure (based on sea-level).
- What field level investigation procedures should be or were used to evaluate the engine?
- How did the NTSB evaluate the engine after recovery of the wreckage?
- What were the likely contributing factors to the aircraft accident? Explain why you believe these factors contributed or did not contribute to the accident.
- What post accident impact damage did the NTSB have to contend with (e.g., missing components, transportation damage, etc.)?
- What field conditions did the NTSB face at this accident site?
- What possible factors contributed to the aircraft accident (e.g., processes, procedures, maintenance, environmental, operational, etc.)?
- What, if anything, would you do differently in the investigation?
