Course Description
This course builds on the structural theories and perspectives of social work practice this course includes a historical overview of Indigenous policies in Canada with a view to inform social work practice. The focus will be on in-depth exploration and critical analysis of past and present policies of Canadian governments that affect the lives of Indigenous peoples. Contemporary responses and initiatives of Indigenous peoples through their own policies and practices will be discussed. Through discussions and assignments students will explore how policies are developed and develop a critical analysis of how social policy impacts practice.

Objectives of the Course
Students will gain an understanding and awareness of historical and contemporary colonial legislation and policies as they pertain to Indigenous peoples
Understand the link between historical and contemporary colonial policies and practices in Canada and their relationship to present socio-economic positions of Indigenous peoples today.
Students will be introduced to the process and skills associated with the ‘policy cycle’
Students will learn how Indigenous peoples are challenging, changing and creating policies
Students will understand anti-colonial approaches to policy analysis and the implications for advocacy for policy change and for the development of new policies
Through discussions and assignments, display an awareness of the issues, resources and goals of contemporary Indigenous peoples and the movement toward sovereignty and self-determination
Develop a deeper understanding in the connection between policy and practice

Annotated Bibliography
Purpose & Instructions:
You are to proceed with this assignment as new learning, or you can link this assignment to an initiative in your work place, practicum or community volunteer work with Indigenous people.
For Indigenous people’s policy aspects have always controlled and sustained a certain way of life and a particular way to practice social work. You will be asked to identify a policy topic area that you would be interested in developing, enhancing and/or implementing. For example issues for Indigenous youth, Indigenous health, Indigenous child & family services policy issues, education policies and practices for Indigenous peoples, over representation of Indigenous peoples in corrections, etc. Please contact your instructor for clarification of topic areas if you are unsure what to examine. Furthermore, begin by looking at the unit themes to inspire you and narrow the area you are focusing on. This assignment will facilitate a process applicable to your style of research and analysis. You will examine your social work interest area and your own personal framework for doing research. Please keep in mind that your topic area must reflect an Indigenous approach that will be effective for Indigenous peoples.
Your annotated bibliography will be developed through research through some useful articles on the course site (maximum of 2).You are to analyze the information through a critical lens and present your findings in a clear and concise way. This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to challenge your existing beliefs, while providing you with a depth of understanding about what it means to do Indigenous research and policy analysis.
Your annotated bibliography will consist of a minimum of 8 references. Three quarters of your literature must be by Indigenous authors, 5 of the 8 sources. The other authors could include allies who are settler colonial/non-indigenous. Only two reference sources can be used from course materials. ( I have uploaded some course articles for you to pick from- can only use two thou) Two sources may be the websites you choose to review for Assignment #2 or other articles in the course. ( I have link the website you used from the other assignment below- either you pick to use the website or articles, but you can only use a max of TWO – AS YOU NEED TO USE NEW SOURCES BY INDIGENOUS AUTHORS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT ) The remaining sources incorporated must be new sources that you researched and may be from academic journal articles, books, videos/documentaries or relevant websites. Diversify the various types of sources you research (for example, do not just go to 4 websites).
The page length for this assignment is 10 to 12 pages maximum, double spaced 12 font, plus cover page and reference page.
