INSTRUCTIONS
The comprehensive examination is designed to focus on a hypothetical health education/health promotion program topic that you have developed for this exam. The program can focus on any health topic of your choice (obesity, physical activity, sexuality, nutrition, cardiovascular disease, etc.), and should be designed to be implemented in any health education setting (community, worksite, school, etc.). In addition to the topic and setting, a specific population should be identified for the program (older adults, office workers, middle school students, etc.). Be specific as possible when discussing the demographics of your target population, i.e., age range (ex. 10-13, 20-25, 60-70 yr. olds), ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc.
Your exam responses should be presented in the order below. You are responsible for submitting all information. Be sure to number your pages.
TOPIC: SETTING: POPULATION:
LITERATURE REVIEW: Develop and present a literature review that provides background information and a rationale for your program. Your review must be presented in a narrative format with citations presented in APA format. Your literature review should be 2 pages and be based on a minimum of 6 sources.
Specifically the review should address the following information:
- National, state, and local calls to action concerning your health topic.
- Discuss the prevalence and incidence related to the health topic.
- Discuss the impact the issue has had on society.
- Discuss relevant interventions/strategies/best practices that have been identified as
appropriate in addressing the topic among this population in this setting.
- Based on the literature in this area, what remains to be done?
NEEDS ASSESSMENT/ASSET ANALYSIS: Describe hypothetical methods that you would use for learning about the possible participants in your program. How will you gather specific data about the health topic in your community? How will you identify issues that support or present challenges in the development and implementation of your program? The following components should be addressed in this section in 1 page
- Discuss secondary data collection methods. Discuss how you gathered information through secondary data collection methods.
- Discuss primary data collection methods and the strategies you used to collect data from your target audience.
- Discuss the major findings from I and II (hypothetical),and summarize the major health concerns of your audience as it relates to the health issue.
- Discuss the findings related to hypothetical assets and challenges of the community.
PROGRAM DESIGN: Utilizing information from the needs assessment/asset analysis process, present the following components of your program in 1 page
- Specific goals and objectives of your program.
- Strategy for recruiting participants.
- Theory or theories that are integrated or form the basis for your program. For each theory, present an overview of theory including underlying constructs, major premises, and examples of how the theory is addressed in your program. Discuss why you choose the specific theory and its appropriateness for addressing your health issue and target audience.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS: Based on your completed needs assessment and program design, provide a detailed, sequential outline of your implementation strategies. The strategies should clearly address the goals/objectives of the program. It should be clear to the reader how each session/intervention component will be implemented with participants. Discuss needed resources (staff, facilities, monetary, etc.) for your intervention strategies in 1 page.
PROGRAM EVALUATION: Discuss the evaluation plan for your intervention. You should present the specific strategies that you will use for process, and impact evaluation as it relates to your program in 1 page.
