I do not accept late submissions. You may want to consider starting early, backing up your work
and/or turning your paper in ahead of time. (50 points)
For your personal ethics paper, you will complete a 3-5 page essay about a course concept
presented during weeks 2-4 of class that is of particular interest and relevancy to you as a future
professional. You will select a concept presented in the course to explore more deeply and reflect
critically on as a person and professional – your report will include three parts: overview of the
professional ethical concept you selected, exposition of a personal example and description of
future professional application and resources related to the concept.
Before beginning your paper, spend some time reflecting on the various concepts and issues
raised in the first few weeks of this course (weeks 2-4) as they relate to professional ethics in
your future career. Review your course readings, related discussion questions and start
researching other sources of guidance and inspiration for your personal report. You will select
one idea or concept from the course.
Writing Your Paper – Content:
Introduction and Concept Overview:
Select one idea from chapters 2-4 of the Purtilo text (only ONE course concept) that you find
most interesting and also applicable to your future career. Select one very specific course
concept that you can comment on thoughtfully and thoroughly within the parameters of this very
short essay format. (e.g., do NOT discuss Purtilo’s 6-step process, that is too much for a this
short section.)
x Define and describe the concept or idea in your own words.
x Explain why this concept or idea is compelling to you personally.
x Explain why this concept or idea is compelling to you professionally.
x It is better to limit the scope of your concept or idea and discuss it thoroughly than to take
on too much and do a poor job explaining it.
x Make sure you develop your description and explanation in a clear, logical way.
x This section will likely require about 1-1.5 pages to complete.
Personal Example:
In this section, illustrate the concept or idea that you define and explain in the first part – using a
particular example from your own experiences as an ethical (or unethical) person to illustrate its
significance.
x Describe your personal experience with the concept/idea you selected – what happened?
Why did you select this example?
x Be sure your example and how you tell the story relates directly and specifically to the
idea/concept you selected. (Avoid talking about your ethical experiences generally or
telling an “ethical” or “unethical” story without specifically tying it back to your
concept.)

x You need to be very specific and concrete in your example, and it should not be a trivial
experience (e.g., telling a story about someone who was “nice” to you will not be
sufficient)
x Make sure to develop your example and its significance in a clear, logical way.
x This section will likely require about 1-1.5 pages to complete.
Professional Application:
Research and select two resources that have ethical relevance for your future career that related
in some way to the concept or idea you selected in the first part. Describe and cite the resources
and explain how these resources will help you on your journey to be an ethical and moral
health/fitness professional. (Consider the who, what, when, where, why and how).
x Select two resources (e.g., professional associations, guiding principles, theories or
frameworks, laws and codes, etc.). Most likely these will be found online and you will
research them that way. They should be distinct – not two pages of the same website.
x Describe the resources – including who and what it is, where it is located or information
can be found (e.g., cite the URL or any other sources you use along with your
description).
x Why did you select these resources and how, specifically, do they relate to your
concept/idea and how they can help you in the future.
x You will need to be very specific and concrete in your explanation, and it should not be a
trivial statement of importance (e.g. stating that “codes of conduct are important for
therapists” will not be sufficient … include how and why and tie back to your course
concept).
x Make sure to develop the explanations of your resources in a clear, logical way.
x This section will likely require 1-1.5 pages to complete.
Writing your Paper – Formatting
Your final paper should meet the following formatting requirements:
x Your essay should be between 3-5 pages and references at the end (references do not count
toward page limits). The body of writing should include an introduction, content as outlined
above with appropriate transitions between ideas and a conclusion.
x Any pages in the body of writing beyond 5 pages (not counting title and references page) will
not be graded. You should practice being clear, complete and succinct in your writing.
x Your paper should be double-spaced, 11 or 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font. Your
document must be submitted as a Microsoft Word (.doc or docx) document or another
editable format. No .pdf documents will be accepted. I make comments and grade papers
using editing and tracking tools, so I need to be able to open, edit and save your document.
x The name of your document must conform to the following format: YOUR
NAME_KIN400_Paper 1.docx (example: Laura Rooney_KIN400_Paper 1). 2.5 points will
be automatically deducted from your grade if this formatting is not followed.
x Your paper should be reviewed and edited prior to submission including proofreading and
spellchecking. I will deduct points for misspellings, typos, grammatical errors and word
choice and writing style that is not consistent with a professional, academic essay.
x Remember it is incumbent upon the writer to convey information and content clearly and
lead the reader through the report. Make sure to reread (or better yet, have someone else read
Brittany Heintz_KIN400_Paper 1
it) your paper from the perspective of someone who is knowledgeable about ethics, but may
not know your professional aspirations, personal stories or perspective. Do not assume your
reader knows more than your reader knows.
x A grading rubric for your paper is included below for your reference. Remember grading
rubrics are designed to guide your preparation of your paper by indicating what weight I will
be placing on various components of the paper and what you should consider as necessary
for complete responses to questions and instructions
