Narrative/Description Writing Prompt
Essay Format
Your assignment is to write a five paragraph narrative essay addressing one of the prompts given
below. This essay must include an introductory paragraph, several central paragraphs, and a
concluding paragraph. The first paragraph must identify the author of the article, title of article, and
provide a clear and identifiable thesis statement. Even though this is a narrative, each central
paragraph must be based on a topic sentence that supports your thesis. As you tell your story, use
vivid description. The concluding paragraph must bring the essay to a satisfactory close.
“Bombs Bursting in Air”
Beth Johnson’s essay “Bombs Bursting in Air” demonstrates how life’s unexpected tragedies can
seem devastating and insurmountable when they occur, but people must courageously live on,
recognizing that even these misfortunes are part of life’s greater mystery and beauty. Write a narrative
essay telling the story of a single bomb in your life and how that bomb impacted your life. May be it
changed you or taught you a life lesson. Your thesis statement should list three subtopics. Use one of
these subtopics as the topic sentence for each body paragraph. Use description in your narrative.

In the essay “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, Sister Flowers entered her life at a crucial and
difficult time. At one time or another just about everyone has met someone who taught us to see
ourselves more clearly and helped us understand what we wanted from life. Write a narrative essay
telling how someone in your life served as a “lifeline,” providing you with guidance and support. Your
thesis statement should list at least 3 lifelines this person gave you. This person may have given you
confidence or provided you with good advice. In your story use description.
