For this assignment you are required to write an essay of approximately 1,800 words which responds to one of …two questions… Each question refers to a concept discussed in the reading assigned for the first week of the course and developed during weeks 2-9.
• must be based on the close analysis of an image, or group of images of your choice (no more than five)
• must draw on at least two works of theory assigned in the course, in addition to the extract from Sturken and Cartwright
Either:
• Sturken and Cartwright claim that “all camera-generated images… bear the cultural legacy of still photography.” (16-17) How might this statement help you make sense of your chosen image or images in terms of technology, representation, or social use? Discuss with close reference to at least two other works of theory assigned in the course.
Or:
• Sturken and Cartwright claim that looking and being looked at can be described as a “social practice” which is, moreover, historically or culturally specific. (9) How does this idea apply to the particular subject which your image or images depict, or the circumstances in which the image or images circulate? Discuss, with close reference to at least two other works of theory assigned in the course.

• Chose images which interest you.
• They can be any ‘kind’ of image (photos, paintings, screen
grabs, postcards, ads, etc) as long as you provide citations
• If you write about a group of images, make sure they relate to one another
• Think carefully about the relationship between image and theory
• You need to refer to at least two assigned readings, as well as the Sturken and Cartwright, but can chose those which serve you best
• Think carefully about the question. Make sure your essay responds to it!
