Atticus Finch is basically a literary character contained in Harper Lee’s popular novel christened, To Kill a Mockingbird. According to the book, Finch, a resident of Maycomb County, which is also a fictional country in Alabama, is an attorney and the father of 2 kids called Jeremy and Jean. Apparently, Lee based the characteristics of Finch on those of his own father, Coleman Lee. Most of the trials obtained from Coleman were highly publicized, only as those who are taken by Finch.
In the novel, Finch is described as a powerful individual with a very strong personality. Finch can also be described as a person who is not afraid to put his own life at risk while defending the rights of blacks that were accused. Not only did the instances place his life in danger but the cases also posed a huge threat to his career. These threats, however, did not seem to frighten away Finch who even worked hard on the highly publicized and controversial circumstances.
Finch’s character is that of a person that actively pursues justice and shows good examples of a scout. The character also shows the importance of ethics and how important it’s to be prepared to sacrifice everything that you has in pursuit of this truth and also in search of justice. It is like Lee admired his father so much that he chose to illustrate exactly what he thought of his dad in the publication. Lee, through Finch’s character, appears to be teaching the audience that as soon as they believe in something, they should not be scared to really go after that thing, whatever the consequences.
One of the most well-known quotations in the novel is what says that “you can never truly know an individual until one begins considering the situation at hand in the view of the individual. It isn’t until one climbs into an individual’s skin and walks around inside one will understand that individual.” In this quotation, Finch appears to be giving an important bit of advice to Scout if she encounters an extremely tough time while at school. The quote is supposed to help Scout return to college even though she’d made up her mind never to return to school.
Another popular quote is “the one thing that does not stick to the majority of what is approved by individuals is an individual’s conscience.” That is a famous quotation from the book because it supplies a piece of information that many people can use by immediately applying it to their own situations. Fundamentally, Finch is stating that individuals should learn how to accept the fact there are certain things that happen in life which we cannot do anything about and should therefore not fight them but learn to accept them as they are.
